Huang Chun-Nian, the Secretary of the Danyang Municipal Party Committee, has said thatDanyang's 'small glasses' have created a 'big industry', taking on the title of the 'China Eyeglasses Capital' with strength.
The eyewear industry in Danyang traces back to the 1960s when apprentices returned from state-owned optical factories in Shanghai and Jiangsu to their hometowns and began eyewear manufacturing.
Currently, there are over 1,600 eyewear-related companies engaging in the trade, with nearly 50,000 industry employees, producing more than 100 million frames annually, accounting for about one third of the national total. They also produce over 400 million optical lenses per year, accounting for about 75% of China's and approximately 50% of the world's total, thereby becoming the world's largest optical lens production base, Asia's largest eyewear product distribution center, China's eyewear production base, and one of China's "Top 100 Industrial Clusters."
The Danyang Eyewear City was built in the 1980s, with a market turnover of over 6 billion yuan annually, becoming a significant and influential eyewear industry trade center, an AAA national tourist shopping attraction, and an eyewear index dissemination center for the pricing, market conditions, and fashion trends.
Before 2007, only a few companies in a few countries could produce ‘high polymer monomer materials’ for resin lenses, priced at CNY 150,000 per ton, with delivery one month after payment. In 2007, the Danyang eyewear industry overcame the difficulties of resin lens raw materials. Over half of the eyewear enterprises there could obtain raw materials at a price only one-third of that in foreign countries but with equal or even better quality. This shattered the vicious competition cycle caused by a lack of dominance, resulting in lower profitability, less R&D, and different quality standards.
They have created a distinctive eyewear industry chain belonging to Danyang, extending from lens production materials to lens cloth boxes and printing packaging. Meanwhile, customized lenses and contact lenses have also been developed.
The Danyang Municipal Government promoted the registration of the "Danyang Eyewear" collective trademark and strengthened the registration, use, and management of eyewear product trademarks. They have also improved intellectual property protection and product quality supervision in the industry. With these, the Danyang eyewear industry has formed a distinctive industrial chain and achieved excellent technological production, gaining competitive advantages in industrial development.
